Teenage Parenting Programme
Evidence from the National Statistics and Teenage Pregnancy Unit has shown a sharp rise in teenage pregnancy in the London Boroughs. Tips4choices has devised a teenage parenting programme to address the high proportion of teenage parents in the London boroughs.
Overall Aim of the Programme
The aim of this parenting programme is to improve the lives of teenage parents, reduce the negative consequences and outcomes associated with the children of teenage parents and where possible to prevent repeated pregnancies by offering Tips4choices.
This teenage parenting programme will help them to look at self awareness, anger, abuse, developing relationships, having children, carers and making choices that will affect them for the rest of their lives.
It will be used as a forum for teenage parents (male and female) to express their views/opinions on issues such as stereotypes, education, finances, what it means to be a parent and the negative images that is associated to a teenage parent.
The programme is split into groups of Pre and Postnatal mums, dads, and couples. This is devised to help them look at situations pertaining to what is happening to them such as the rights of single fathers and how to access help and support.
The programme consists of 6 3hours sessions, taught in consecutive weeks to teenage parents between the ages of 12-19 years of age. The classes will consist of 12-16 teenage parents and 2 facilitators.
All participants will be involved in setting the ground rules. Respect, confidentiality and being non judgemental will be stressed through out the sessions. This will help to create an atmosphere where they will feel safe to explore their experiences.
All sessions will include brainstorming and discussing their issues with role plays and self examination work sheet. Sessions will also include speakers re work and education, 100 Black Men re stereotypes and role models and midwives re health. These speakers are professionals and will be able to steer the young parents into positive direction that can be beneficial to them, while enhancing discussions and debates in a controlled environment.
The teenage parents will be given folders as handouts will be given during the programme. They will also be asked to record their experiences while on the programme.
Refreshments, Support in the form of advocacy and counselling for those involve with Social Services and the courts. A crèche will be provided for parents .
